Growing Update

April 14,2008

Blackberries - The early thorny varieties, Choctaw and Roseborough, are in full bloom and loaded with flowers and should be producing ripe berries around the middle of May. The early thornless varieties, Ouchita and Arapaho, are just starting to flower and should be ready around Memorial Day, with our later varieties, Navaho and Apache, ripening about a week or so later.

We will also have a limited supply of boysenberries available around the middle of May on a pre-picked basis only. For those who are unfamiliar with boysenberries, they are a trailing variety of berry which is a cross between a blackberry and raspberry. They are roughly the same size as a blackberry, but are purple and have a more mild flavor to them.

Blueberries - We currently have 5 varieties, Climax, Premier, Brightwell, Tifblue and Powderblue, of which all are going into their second year of growth. Please note, even though blueberry plants take approximately six years to come to full maturity, we should have plenty of berries starting around the end of May for you to fill a bucket. However, if you are looking to pick gallons of blueberries, we should be able to accommodate you next year.

Muscadine - We have 8 different types of muscadine, Sugargate, Ison, Darlene, Pam, Black Beauty, Florida Fry, Granny Val and Sweet Jenny. They are just starting to wake up and should have some tasty grapes around the middle of August.

Fruit Trees - We have a variety of young fruit trees, peaches, nectarines, plums and Japanese persimmons, all going into their second season. Unfortunately, they won't be bearing fruit for a couple of more years.
