We got into farming about eight years ago. However, having
both had successful Air Force careers in the communications and computer fields, you can say farming
was not one of our mastered skills. But with persistence and taking small steps with a lot of advice and help from fellow
farmers and the Extension service along the way, farming has become our way of life.
This will be
the 5th season our U-Pick will be open to the public. We have 35 rows of berries ranging from 250-300 feet
long with six different varieties of blackberries and five different varieties of blueberries to pick from starting
around the first of June. We also have 11 rows of grapes with eight different varieties of muscadine and
scuppernongs to pick from starting around the middle of August.
We are very
proud of our U-Pick and try to keep all accessible areas nicely mowed and trimmed so your picking experience will
hopefully be a very positive one. We also have other ammenities such as a paved parking lot, small picnic area, restroom
and water fountain to make your stay even more enjoyable.
We are also very excited about our outdoor hydroponic garden.
This year we have redesigned the garden to accommodate over 1300 vegetable plants, to include various varieties of yellow
squash, zucchini, bell peppers, beans, eggplants, cucumbers and, of course, our low-acid "First Lady II" tomatoes. The
hydroponic garden will not be open for u-picking, but we do sell the vegetables at our fruit stand as well as through
our new CSA we're planning to implement this season.
Also, the Pumpkin Patch and Hayride in October turned out to be a big success and we now plan on having one every Fall here at Barber Berry Farm.
Well, that's a little bit about us and the farm. If you have any questions
or would like a tour, please don't hesitate to ask.
Hope to see you out here soon!
